Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has been known for its draconian COVID-19 vaccine mandates, and now it has emerged that they only adopted this stance after polls found that liberals supported it ahead of the elections.
According to reports on Blacklock’s Reporter, the poll determined that Liberals were strongly in favor of heavy-handed vaccine mandates. Its results were finalized just days before the country’s election was announced, making it clear that Trudeau was trying to use a strong pro-vaccine stance to garner votes.
In addition to asking Canadians if they supported the idea of mandatory vaccine policies, the pollsters were also told to find out which terminology the public found most palatable. Some of the possible ways of referring to the mandates put forth included “vaccination credentials”, “vaccine passport”, and “vax pass”.
According to the poll, there were important regional differences. In Atlantic Canada, which has been largely liberal for several decades, there was unanimous support for requiring that passengers provide proof of vaccination to take domestic flights. People in this area also indicated that they had no privacy concerns about the matter. However, in longtime conservative strongholds such as Alberta and Saskatchewan, there was unanimous opposition to requiring vaccine proof for flying and widespread support for the belief that disclosing vaccination status is a personal decision.
After the results of the poll were released, there was a marked change in Trudeau’s position on the question of vaccines. He went from seemingly supporting freedom of choice at the start of 2021 to encouraging discrimination against people who choose not to get the jab later in the year.
For example, on January 14, 2021, he told reporters: “There are a broad range of reasons why someone might not get vaccinated. I think the indications that the vast majority of Canadians are looking to get vaccinated will get us to a good place without having to take more extreme measures that could have real divisive impacts on community and country.”
However, after the poll was released pointing to strong support among his base for vaccine mandates, he started to call those who are opposed to mandates a “small, fringe minority” and publicly question if society should tolerate those who don’t get jabbed.
Trudeau’s cabinet has insisted that there is a scientific basis for introducing the mandates, but no health agencies in the country have provided evidence of this.
The government continues to enforce a strict vaccine mandate for all travel by air, train and sea, along with employees of the federal government. They are currently weighing whether booster shots will be included in the next version of their mandate for workers. The existing policy requires that all federal public servants receive two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine or risk unpaid leave – and it even applies to those who are working from home despite them posing no risk to the health and safety of the public.
Although the current review could technically deem the mandate no longer necessary, many fear it may actually expand the mandate in hopes of getting more public servants to line up for boosters. The definition of “fully vaccinated” may change as part of the review, which could see workers needing a booster to keep their pay. Right now, more than 98 percent of the country’s federal public workers say they are fully jabbed.
Although the vaccination rate among Canada’s general population aged 18 and older is around 90 percent, booster uptake has not been as impressive, with the current rate standing at 57 percent.
Governments and leaders often use polls to shape policy decisions, but it’s very unsettling to think that the health of Canadians could have been put in jeopardy by forcing untested vaccines on people as part of a ploy to increase the prime minister’s odds of reelection.
