Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison urged people not to demonize those turning down the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine. His remarks followed comments by another politician calling for those who refuse the vaccine to be stripped of health insurance benefits.
Morrison exhorted people not to vilify those refusing the COVID-19 shot during a Nov. 11 interview with David Koch and Natalie Barr – hosts of “Sunrise” on the Seven Network.
The prime minister told the hosts: “We live in a country where we’re not going to go around demonizing those who want to make their own choices. I think that’s very important. That’s not how our government works.”
Morrison emphasized that the Australian federal government in Canberra does not require citizens to get injected. “We don’t have a mandatory vaccine policy as a federal government. That’s not something that we have done. We respect people’s choices. Of course, we want people to get vaccinated under these policies.”
He cited figures from different states. “New South Wales (NSW) is now at 90 percent double dose, [and] Victoria will soon be there. We’ve had less COVID now at 80 percent [vaccination] up in Queensland when it comes to their first doses. We’ll hit 90 percent first dose … for the whole country,” he said. “We got there because we’ve just trusted Australians. They know what they need to do.”
Morrison also shot down comments by former NSW Premier Bob Carr, who served in the position from 1995 to 2005. The former state leader has called for those turning down the shot to be stripped of benefits under the country’s Medicare health insurance system.
“Of course, we want people to get vaccinated – but we’re not going to take that heavy-handed approach … whether it’s Bob Carr or many of the other who we’ve seen come down with those types of views. It’s not our approach,” the prime minister said.
Carr took to social media to slam unvaccinated Australians. He tweeted on Nov. 9: “Follow Singapore and legislate no medical or hospital expenses to be reimbursed to people who are not vaccinated without medical justification and then contract [COVID-19]. You ignored warnings and got the disease. You pay for your willful stupidity, not the rest of us.”
He doubled down on his argument in subsequent tweets, insisting that the no reimbursement policy “should be enforced as we enforce smoke-free work environments or no driving while drunk.” He added: “A pig-headed view that one has the perfect right to be unvaccinated without medical justification is a violation of the rights of others to life and health.” (Related: MEDICAL TYRANNY: Breaking covid rules could land Aussies in prison for two years.)
While Morrison is correct that Canberra does not have a federal vaccine mandate, these orders are present in individual states. State premiers appear to be in agreement with Carr’s approach, but have used other ways to push Australians to get injected.
Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced on Nov. 9 that unvaccinated residents would be subject to new restrictions starting Dec. 17, when the vaccination rate is expected to hit 80 percent. Only vaccinated Australians will be allowed to enter dining establishments, cultural venues, locations where live performances are held, prisons, medical facilities and care homes from that date.
Palaszczuk added that once the 80 percent vaccination rate is hit, fully vaccinated people can enjoy normal weddings once more. Capacity restrictions at hospitality and event venues will also be lifted as long as all staff members and patrons have received the COVID-19 shot. She added that face masks will no longer be required in indoor settings when the vaccination target is reached.
“This is both a reward for the fully vaccinated and precaution for when the borders open and we will see more cases in our community. People deserve to know that they can go to these places and know that they are safe. This is our next step [at] keeping Queenslanders safe,” the Queensland premier said.
Former NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian also mandated COVID-19 vaccines for teachers in her state. She and NSW Education Minister Sarah Mitchell announced the new order on Aug. 27.
The mandate called on teaching staff to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 by Nov. 8. The two officials said the vaccination drive forms part of NSW’s roadmap toward a return to in-person learning. They also instituted a mask mandate for all teachers and high school students. Berejiklian stepped down from her position as state premier on Oct. 5.
